Knights and Kings

Today I'm posting a type of Chess puzzle that is neither a Sudoku nor a Latin square.  The goal here is to fill in the grid so that exactly half the pieces in each row and column are knights, and the other half are kings.  The clues tell how many of the same piece that the piece in that cell can attack.  For example, in the following completed four-by-four puzzle, the two in the upper right cell means that this square either contains a knight that can attack two other knights, or a king which can attack two other kings.

The goal of this puzzle is to do the same thing with exactly three knights and three kings in each row and column.

Three similar puzzles will be appearing in the next issue of the MAA Focus with a focus on knights and bishops.  It contains a more challenging eight-by-eight puzzle as well.
